July 05, 1968 - May 27, 2017
WILMOT – Thomas William Bates, born July 5, 1968, in Salem, MA, died peacefully at his home in Wilmot, NH, on Saturday, May 27, 2017, after a short battle with cancer.
Tom had a love for God, a passion for people, and a zest for life that radiated from his being and left an indelible mark on the lives of his family, his friends and the Colby Sawyer College community he loved so much.
Tom graduated from Merrimack Valley Regional High School and served in the United States Air Force Security Police. Over the years, Tom worked as a police officer, dispatcher, salesman and roof consultant, but found his true calling serving the community at Colby Sawyer College, where he considered the students, faculty and staff part of his family, and where he worked as a Campus Safety Officer and Christian Fellowship Advisor.
Anyone who knew Tom knew that he lived life to its fullest and brought joy to everyone who was fortunate enough to cross his path. Tom’s mantra was, “Be present and live intentionally!” Tom lived in the now, always looked for the good, and found blessings in every circumstance – he had an innate ability to look into the darkness and see the diamonds.
Even though the cancer came with many challenges, Tom believed without a doubt that, “… in all things God works for the good of those who love him and have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28. He viewed his cancer as a vehicle that allowed him to share his faith even more. Tom was amazed daily at how much good God worked through his cancer – and he amazed all who knew him with his positive attitude, joyful spirit, and selfless love.
Tom is survived by his wife Nancy (Benward) Bates, son John Bates, parents William and Loretta Bates, and siblings David Bates, Amy Cushing, and Becky Smart.
