East Wakefield, NH
Nellie A. Smith, age 77, of Bragdon Farm Road in East Wakefield, died quietly at home on Sunday, October 20, 2019.
Born at home on September 12, 1942 in Seabrook, NH, a daughter of Edmund Roscoe and Charlotte K. (Humes) Marshall, she was raised and resided there for 35 years, lived in Hampton Falls and resided in East Wakefield the past 26 years.
Nellie is survived by her husband Paul C. Smith. Paul stood by his beloved wife for forty-four years, and as her health declined, he was always at her side and took care of her every need. Their story was one of love and strength, and she could not have found a more patient and loving husband than Paul. Throughout the majority of her adult life, Nellie suffered from mental illness. She used her passion for painting, music, cooking, crocheting, and sewing to help quiet her mind. Nellie was fiercely stubborn and never stopped being a creative person who sought to find the beauty in life. Nellie could play the piano, the organ and she could sing, in fact she could often be heard singing along with the radio. She would paint with acrylics and pastels, and if she didn’t have anything else at hand, she would use nail polish as her medium to create art. Nellie loved her children dearly and was very proud of them. The children remember her taking them to the beach, which was one of her favorite places. Her children also have fond memories of her fantastic cooking and the wonderful meals that she made in the wood oven. Some particularly favorite recipes were skillet pineapple upside down cake, cinnamon raisin bread rolls, and volcano muffins. In the last few years of Nellie’s life, she overcame her mental illness and was able to strengthen her relationship with her family. Her mind was quiet, and she continued to find joy in her artistic pursuits. Nellie’s life was one of strength and determination and is an inspiration to those that knew her.
